Done is new perfect

I am experimenting. This year, no goals have been set yet. At least not the measurable ones. The main operating timeframe is a day and the mission is to learn. The underlying lesson since this year began is that done is better than perfect.

There are a few helpful guiding principles:

🧭 Using what I already have in my stock

🧭 Make decisions when I notice I am getting trapped in overanalyzing

🧭 Narrating my thought process out loud is strange, but helpful

🧭 Do the minimum possible when I don’t feel like it

Simple becoming complex

I discovered an inspiring channel on YouTube - Art with Flo. Easy, colourful tutorial! Bingo!

To be honest, I saw a 1 min long cut of this and thought - I can do this!

1. Rectangles

Well! I haven’t realized drawing simple rectangle shapes could become so challenging! Of course, I didn’t want to copy the tutorial to the pixel. I spent almost 45 minutes deciding how they should be laid out! How to properly use layers in Procreate so I can work with them later.

2. Colours

And then there are the colours! An hour later, I was set on purple/magenta tones from Mr Inbetween.

3. Brushes

I noticed in the video the use of pattern brushes. Hm 🤔 Into the google search bar! After downloading and installing a bunch of brushes I found for free I managed to find the original brushes used in the video.

4. Windows, doors, balconies

Don’t even….

Determined to finish

I was already investing about 4 hours into this “simple” drawing and determined to finish. I was envisioning how it would all look nice printed out. Around 22:45 the last brush stroke, export aaaand… Tadaa

done and printed

I love looking at this print every time I walk by. It makes me proud. It tells me I started something new and I finished it. It is not perfect, far from it. It embodies the whole process, struggles and seemingly wasted time on little decisions. Somehow I love this even more.
